Archaeological
excavations at the Otyrar settlement revealed the existence of an underground
pipeline system designed to discharge domestic wastewater and rainwater beyond
the city limits. The individual pipes measured approximately 1 meter in length
and had a diameter ranging from 30 to 40 centimeters.
The pipeline
network extended from the central part of the city — the main thoroughfare — to
the dead-end streets. Such an engineering design helped prevent flooding during
heavy rains and ensured the timely removal of wastewater.
Overall,
this system of underground pipes, also found in other ancient cities such as
Otyrar, Sauran, and Taraz, demonstrates the advanced level of engineering
infrastructure and the high standards of sanitation maintained by the urban
population during the medieval period.
